Under contract with NASA, Pratt & Whitney provides and services three pairs of high-pressure turbopumps for the Space Shuttle main engines. Each high-pressure fuel turbopump uses 76,000 horsepower to deliver liquid hydrogen, and each high-pressure oxidizer turbopump uses 26,800 horsepower to deliver liquid oxygen to the Space Shuttle's main combustion chamber. This is the seventh in a series of videos intended to provide visual guidance to those personnel directly involved in the overhaul and maintenance of the high-pressure fuel turbopumps.

Despite its name, a confined space doesn't have to be small. A confined space is a space that is fully or partially enclosed. The following conditions must be met for it to be considered confined. It is neither designed nor constructed for continuous human occupancy. Atmospheric hazards may occur because of the space's construction, location, contents, or because of the work that is done within it. Both of these conditions must apply for a space to be considered a confined space.

There, the Rubus operator will prepare the Rubus and engage the trailer dock restraint. They will open the trailer door, burst the trailer if it is containerized, align the trailer, attach the belts, and run the Rubus. After the unload is completed, the Rubus operator will retract and stow the unit, close the dock door, and disengage the trailer dock restraint to close out the dock. Finally, the shunter departs the Rubus dock with the empty trailer and drops the Rubus trailer in the pre-assigned loadout door or in assigned parking in the yard.

How does a utility choose the right mix? Each technology has its own life cycle cost, a combination of the cost to build and the cost to run. Simple cycle power plants typically have the lowest capital cost, but utilize a more costly fuel source. Combined cycle power plants cost a little more to build, but have higher efficiency. Comparing the two, simple cycle makes the most economic sense to use for shorter periods of time. Coal, nuclear, and most renewables can cost the most to build, but become the most efficient when utilized for a long time.

From there, the driver will place chalk blocks on the tires and then proceed to ground the unit by clamping the grounding wire to the frame of each trailer, should more than one trailer be required. Once the fluid hauling unit is grounded, the driver will then turn the bleed valves on each line to release any pressure that may have built up. The driver will then secure the proper facility hose to both the vapor and liquid openings on each trailer and then close the bleed lines.

While each situation is different and may require additional controls or actions to safely contain, control, and clean up, the following general instructions are for responding to an acid-related emergency. Don the required PPE as per the SDS to safely handle the product and respond to the incident. When handling any acid or treating someone with acid burns, always ensure you wear chemical-resistant PPE, including chemical-resistant gloves, face shield or goggles, and apron or chemical suit, such as Tyvek. Respiratory protection, such as an acid gas cartridge or an SCBA, when there are high levels of acid vapor.
