Eastern European immigrants whose collaborations set the stage for the next hundred years of achievement by creative women. The Salome Ensemble reveals the fascinating, important, and untold stories of this extraordinary quartet of newly Americanized women. From Minsk to Manhattan and ultimately to Malibu, these four Jewish feminists blazed creative pathways through the same cultural thicket that entangled so many millions of newcomers at the turn of the 20th century. Shifting shapes, crossing genres, and shattering stereotypes, this ensemble, inventing Americanized versions of themselves, produced art, print journalism, popular fiction, and Hollywood movies, including the celebrated silent film Salome of the Tenements. Much like the women themselves, their film's title character was a combination of the biblical seductress Salome and Cinderella, the persecuted heroine who ultimately triumphed over oppression. The bold exploits of these young females from faraway places with strange-sounding names often became front-page news. When historian Alan Robert Ginsburg was growing up, his grandmother, herself a first-generation immigrant from Eastern Europe, told him the stories of these women, so famous in their time but long forgotten. Her recollection inspired Ginsburg to embark on a 12-year journey to find and hear their voices. Rose Pastor Stokes, the social activist who guided Theodore Roosevelt through the squalid tenements of Manhattan's Lower East Side and promoted reproductive rights with Margaret Sanger. Rose fought for women's rights alongside suffragists, feminists, and labor leaders. She also married a millionaire. After Rose boldly challenged President Woodrow Wilson, he told his supporters to lock her up. Anzia Yazerska. Anzia was the author whose prolific and popular works in glamorous fashion sense led to her tabloid nickname, The Sweatshop Cinderella. The New York Times branded her The Historian of Hester Street. Anzia aspired to write great literature, like Tolstoy or Edith Wharton. She burst through publishers' locked doors and closed mines to call attention to her stories of women immigrants becoming Americans. Her prose was adapted into silent films like Hungry Heart. One of those stories, Salome of the Tenements, was based on her friend Rose. Sonia Lavigne. Sonia was a screenwriter who became one of the highest-earning female screenwriters in Hollywood, winning an Oscar and helping a number of directors and movie stars transition from silent films to talkies. Sonia charmed everyone. She walked Teddy Roosevelt through New York's Lower East Side tenements to persuade him to provide milk for poor children, and he did. In Los Angeles, she won the affection of F. Scott Fitzgerald and Harpo Marx and an Oscar for Best Screenplay. Basketball was ideal for city life because it could be played in a playground or even a gymnasium. And no expensive equipment was needed, only a ball and a hoop. In no time at all, schools, neighborhood centers, and civic organizations began promoting the game as a wholesome pastime and a great way for immigrant and city youngsters to bust stereotypes and demonstrate that they were as athletic as other Americans. Some of the young Jewish stars of the tenement basketball took their love for the game with them into college. They helped invent the world of college basketball and shaped the way the game would be played forever more. Among them was a legend, Nat Holman, or as he came to be called, Mr. Basketball. Nat first rose to basketball stardom in the early 1920s as a member of the original Celtics, an all-star team and the first to command national attention. The Celtics were responsible for many innovations, including some pioneered by Nat himself. But Nat was already unusual. He excelled as both a player and a coach. Just a few years earlier, at age 23, he had become the youngest coach in the country when he was hired to lead the team at City College. With Nat at the helm, the City College Beavers became champions. In 1950, City College became the first and only team to win the Grand Slam of American College Basketball, championships of both the NCAA and NIT tournaments. A hair-raising finale as City College snares the last basket to saw up the game 71-68. First team to win basketball's Grand Slam, the NIT and national titles, a triumph for coach Nat Holman. Twenty years after Nat's last game as a player, there were still few who could equal his skills on the court. In 1950, American sportswriters named him as the third greatest player in the history of basketball.
