Grandma, it's so good to hear your voice. Well, hello there. It's been too long since we talked. How are you, dear? I'm doing really well, Grandma. School's going great. My grades are solid, and things have been good with Mom and Dad. They've been super supportive. I'm really sorry I haven't called more. I've just been so overwhelmed with my studies. Everything's been piling up. Oh, don't you worry about that, honey. I know how busy school can be. I'm just glad to hear you're doing well. Thanks, Grandma. You know, I didn't want to say anything, but I've got a bit of a problem, and I didn't know who else to turn to. Oh, dear. What's going on? You know you can tell me anything. Well, I need some textbooks. I've done everything I can, but I still need to cover the cost of a few more books, and I can't complete my courses without them. Oh, textbooks. You had me worried it was something serious. I know it's not life or death, Grandma, but it's important. The thing is, I know Mom and Dad are really struggling with money right now, and I don't want to embarrass them by asking for help. I'm sure they'd feel awful if they knew. You're a good boy thinking of them. How much do you need, sweetheart? I hate to ask, but I need about $1,000. That would cover the textbooks for both semesters. I know it's a lot, and I wouldn't ask if I had any other option. Oh, honey, that's no problem at all. Education is important, and I'm happy to help. How should I send it? Thank you so much, Grandma. Could you go to Walmart and wire it to me? It's the fastest way, and I could get it all sorted before classes start again. Of course, sweetheart. I'll head over right now. Just, should I let your parents know, or... Oh, no, Grandma. Please don't. I'd hate for them to feel like they've let me down. They're doing everything they can. I just don't want them to worry about it. At least until I've sorted things out. You understand, right? Of course, honey, I understand. I'll keep this between us. My lips are zipped. You just focus on your studies, all right? Thank you, Grandma. Really. I don't know what I'd do without you. I can't wait to see you at Thanksgiving. I can't wait either, sweetheart. I'll make you that pecan pie you love so much. You had ten pieces last year. Okay, maybe only three. You're the best, Grandma. I love you so much. I love you too, darling. I'm so proud of you. Keep up the good work. I will, Grandma. I'll call you as soon as I get it. What you just heard may have sounded like a genuine conversation between a grandson and his grandmother. Now the question is, could you tell which parts of that call were AI generated?

Script:
Second-rate Film School presents the Blair Witch Chronicle. Our elder Daphne gave this interview on national television. Most of us prefer the term Wiccans. Wicca is a recognized religion and is the basis for our practice. Witch also evokes derisive stereotypes and the long era when our traditions were nearly wiped out by younger, less tolerant religions. Circle of Protection, I have begun and sustain its power. Commit this circle to the lasting will. And enclose it. Circle of Protection, we have begun and sustain its power against all dark. We just had no idea. No idea at all of what we were really dealing with. By earth and fire and water and smoke, for seventy do I invoke. We beseech thee, Mother, find this work, that it may last. I think that went rather well. Well, it was amazing.

Davey, are we close? It was deeper into the jungle than I was, so, um, maybe a little bit farther. Ah! Oh! I think there were still a few rays of sun coming through the canopy when you were here, Davey. We'll use my flashlight now. Okay, I'll just pan across the... The ghost! See, there it is! I don't see it! Oh! Oh, huge, shallow eyes, just... I'll just widen the radius of the flashlight beam. It's just a bird! I can still barely see it on that branch they put those eyes. See, Davey? Just a bird. Yeah, that's what I heard. Stupid bird. It's a wonderful creature. That's a northern potoo. They are really hard to see because their feathers have evolved to look exactly like tree bark. And during the day, they sit perfectly still and shape their bodies to mimic the branch or stump. They have slits in their eyelids so they can detect movement without revealing their huge eyes, which can look bright and iridescent when light hits them. Oh, right, like the flashlight. Or a bit of sun, which is probably what happened when Davey saw it. They're big like that so they can see in the dark. And that huge mouth allows them to fly through a swarm of insects and swallow a whole meal. Oh, there it goes. You'll have to scare somebody else. Most likely not. People can wander in their habitat for years and never see one. They've probably walked past hundreds of them. In fact, you know what their nickname is, Davey? Scary bug-eye big mouth? You were right the first time. It's ghost bird because of their haunting cry and their being so difficult to see. So thank you, Davey, for bringing them to our attention. I would have been scared too, Davey. Animals are stern. We better get heading back. Goodbye, you crazy wonderful birds. Hope we meet again.

I think I've figured it out. Daniel wants to sell Lily's dowry, but Lily has it hidden away, so Daniel can't ship it out. This is really strange. If Lily needed money for gambling, she could have sold her dowry. Since she hasn't sold it, it indicates that it's not Lily who needs the money, it's Daniel! Lily, you didn't gamble, nor did you kill anyone, right? Answer me! I know you're there! Why did the light flicker again? Is that you, Lily? Lily, Lily, is that you? Do you have something to say to Mom? What do you want to tell me? Oh, God, can you speak? Oh, my! I had a daughter who was a gambler and a murderer? Oh, such misfortune! Wait! Why do I have such a clear understanding of the image of the village chief entering the house? No, no! I remember now! I remember everything! That night, I saw the village chief! I could never believe that my daughter could do such a monstrous thing. I went alone to my in-law's house. In the living room, I found a passbook and an account book. Then, guided by Lily's ghost, I found the dowry she had hidden. Finally, I turned on the bedroom TV and managed to speak to Lily. But before Lily could finish, the TV was turned off. Then I saw the village chief enter the door. It was he who pulled the main switch! So, you knew all along that Daniel was the murderer? Yes. As a mother, I also firmly believe my daughter is innocent.

Hey sweetheart, it's mom. I've been thinking about you lately, as I always do. You know, ever since you were little, you've loved to be surrounded by people. You'd light up every room, make friends with everyone, always finding someone to share your time with. But my dear, there will be times when you'll find yourself alone. And that's okay. In fact, sometimes it's in those moments of quiet that we see things the clearest. I want you to know that being alone doesn't mean you're lonely. There's something special in the quiet, Devon. It's a chance to think, to grow, and to find your strength. I know you'll see it, the beauty in those quiet moments when the world feels distant. And remember, my love, you're never truly alone. I'm always with you, in your heart, thinking of you. I love you, Devon. Take care of yourself. Bye.

My dearest boy, I'm sorry that I have to do this. I could not bear to let you see me like this. Though I may have failed to tell you often enough, I am incredibly proud of you, my son, and always have been. You've managed to carry yourself through life's hardships without losing your honor and character. I've always reproached your stubbornness, but the truth is I never wanted to admit that you inherited that from me. Perhaps I saw too much of myself in you. My biggest regret was not seeing your father for who he truly was. For that I will always be sorry. But you, my brave boy, you have survived him and will become more than he ever deserved to witness. You've already proven that. There is no doubt in my mind that you and Lily will create a beautiful future together and have the life you both deserve. I've wanted nothing more than to see my great-great-granddaughter and namesake grow up. But my time has come, son. I thought I could hold on a bit longer, but alas, life has its own plans for us all. Please don't think any less of me for this choice. I've lived life on my terms, and I want to leave this world on my terms, too. Make sure to kiss little Ada for me and tell her all about her great-great-nana who loves her more than words can say. It's now your responsibility to lead and care for your family, son. Be strong for me, for them. I will always love you all and watch over you from wherever I may be. Remember this always, my darling. You are my greatest gift. Love, Ada

My name is Mary Ward. I'm 93 years old and I'm dying. It's not so bad really, just taking a long time to get on with it. The drugs in my IV are keeping me comfortable more or less and effectively comatose. But I can hear well enough. I know that Brent and Elaine are here on death watch, as good children should be. Of course, it would mean a lot more if either of them cared at all. Naturally, I can't answer that. Were I able to speak, however, I could tell her exactly how it happened, why it doesn't matter anymore, and precisely where Janet has gone. It started when my too-busy-to-be-bothered children hired Janet Rodman as my caregiver. Yes, yes, of course I will. At least I will until you've stolen the last of my savings. You won't need me to sign any more checks or withdrawal slips. And whatever you put in that glass will probably kill me. Yes, yes. There, now go on. Get out of here and leave me in peace. That monster had been drugging me from the day she arrived. I never knew what it was she put in the concoctions she made me drink, but they had an effect I never could have imagined from the start. Her drugs had given me the most amazing dreams about my garden, always about my beautiful garden. The wheelchair that imprisons me in the waking world didn't exist in my dream state, and I would walk freely through the hedgerows of fragrant honeysuckle and beds of blooming roses, daffodils, pansies, geraniums, and so many more.

Don't you just love mornings? It is a start to a new day. I always love seeing the sun come through the car window. It shoots dancing rays off the sparkly zipper pocket on the front of my backpack. My name is Maggie, and today is a school day. School rocks. I get to play with all the kids in my class, especially my friends Diego, Hudson, Jordan, and Robin. Best of all, I get to see Sweetie Pie, our class guinea pig. I love it when she puts her paws up on the side of her cage. I love it when she wiggles her little nose. But I love it most when she says, wee, wee, wee, wee, wee, wee, wee, wheat. I hope Sweetie Pie is back in school today. Miss Lambs, my teacher, took her home last night because our fur buddy wasn't acting like her joyful self. I don't think Sweetie Pie was feeling well. I'm so glad Miss Lambs loves Sweetie Pie as much as I do. I know she'll take super good care of her. Miss Lambs smiles a lot when she is outside. Today is different, though, because she isn't smiling. Instead, I notice that Miss Lambs has a new, soft look on her face. As she settles down in front of us, she smooths a wrinkle in the quilt. Do you all remember yesterday when Sweetie Pie wasn't feeling well? She asks us. And do you remember I took her home? I took especially good care of her. She got her favorite treats, an organic carrot and romaine lettuce. She only nibbled a bit on each one. Even with the extra love and attention, I could tell that Sweetie Pie just wasn't feeling well. Miss Lambs pauses and starts to fidget with her hands before she continues. Do you know that when we are first born, we take our first breath? Everyone, please take a deep breath and fill your lungs with air, she says. I do what she said, but it doesn't make any sense to me. Did you know that when it is time for us to leave this earth, we take our last breath, asks Miss Lambs. She still has that soft look in her eyes. Sweetie Pie took her last breath this morning. Robin cries out, you mean she's dead? Yes, Sweetie Pie died this morning. I was holding her, replies Miss Lambs. Hudson and Jordan start crying. Where is she now, asks Hudson. Can we see her, questions Jordan. Does she look scary now? Robin trembles as she asks, why did she die? Can we get sick from her and die too? I can feel tears building up in my eyes. And when I see Diego start crying, I start to cry too. I blurt out, I want my mama. I don't want this to be a new day anymore. I want it to be yesterday, when Sweetie Pie was alive. Miss Lambs makes me feel better, saying, it's OK to cry, Maggie. We're all sad. Sweetie Pie was very special. Let's share what we remember about our favorite fur buddy and all the special times we had.
