Astral Projection
Magic
Script:
The first thing Tesla saw was Crowley's smiling face right in front of him. We've arrived, recognize this place? Tesla looked around. They were standing on a street corner, the night illuminated by the yellow glow of gas lights. The buildings were decrepit and bleak, the residents more so. He immediately recognized the Tenderloin District, a wretched bastion of vagabonds, street gangs, prostitutes, and morphine addicts. How did we get here? Tesla asked Crowley, who no longer looked pale and tired, but of a healthy color. The same way we got from your bed to the bedroom doorway. Astral projection. Though to get here, we move through a conduit of the astral plane. The distance? Physical distance irrelevant. But this sort of place, physical space-time, is not the astral form's natural environment. It takes extra concentration for me to keep us here, but we'll only need to stay long enough for me to show you what I need to. Tesla looked down at himself, raised his palms, and turned them over. I feel normal. I feel like I am in my physical body, standing on this street. That's to be expected. Now, please allow me to direct your attention to the brothel, yonder.

Well, with one thing and another, it's 1964 before they ever start filming the first pilot. But all the MGM magic is applied, and they end up with one of the most beautiful and most expensive TV pilots ever made. Of course, Roddenberry put in all his own ideas, and by the time he was through, the only thing left from the movie was the opening lines of the title sequence. Space, the new frontier, these are the voyages, etc., etc.

"'Hey!' the man shouted. He tossed a knife towards Hala, not hard enough to knock over a chicken. Hala caught it as the juggler tossed another knife. Soon she held all four knives. "'Trombach!' Hala gathered all the knives into her left hand and pushed on through the crowd. "'Wait! Trombach!' "'Thank you for the knives,' Hala called over her shoulder. She muttered to me, "'Maybe he will go do something useful now.'" Whistler appeared beside me. He whispered, "'I brought this love potion.' He held up a tiny clay jar. "'You think it's real?' Ask Hala to drink it. If you live, it's real. "'Ah, shoot! I'm getting my money back!' He slithered away through the crowd, muttering. I heard Hala say, "'Show us to the Oracle.' A woman's tight voice said, with a slight accent, "'No, I deny your entry. You're impolite and the Oracle despises impolite people. Go on now, go away. Shoo!' I turned to see what was happening. Hala glanced at me with raised eyebrows. A starkly beautiful young woman, not much older than a girl, guarded the door. Before I could speak, Whistler stomped up beside me. "'She won't give me back my money!' "'Will that bother you if I kill her?' "'Yes, it will. How many dead men have you robbed? Now this old grandmother, cheesy out of a few bits, you'll never miss. You're a wealthy man. Don't you feel shame?' Whistler stared at the ground. "'I guess I do. A little.' He turned away, and I heard him mutter, "'And she's not that old.' I turned back to the door guardian. "'May I please visit the Oracle, young woman? I promise to be polite and pleasant. I have a present for her, to show my respect.' Hala cocked her head. "'You have a present?' "'I do, if you give me those knives.' I turned back to the young lady and smiled my most woman-stealing smile.

Down the road I could hear the perp taunting us, though I couldn't make out his words. What's he saying? I asked Drake. Oh, you know, the same thing they always say. You'll never take me alive, copper. That sort of stuff. I glared at the former football player. Are you kidding me right now? Our bodies are about to gain a few extra holes and you've got jokes?

I got up and went to the sink, I started scrubbing the griddle in fast, ferocious movements, furious at myself for having a big mouth, for being stupid, for everything. That's okay, daddy, we can still do it, mommy won't mind. I nodded curtly, maybe Annie wasn't the only one who needed strong magic.

Reaching the door a split second before Jim, he opened it and Jim ducked in. The waitress gaped at them and opened her mouth to speak, but Mark pointed out the window and gasped out, TORNADO COMING! TAKE COVER! The child that Mark had heard in his dream cried out, and instead of finding safety, everyone swarmed to the windows to see for themselves. NO! GET AWAY FROM THE WINDOWS! THEY'RE GONNA BLOW! EVERYONE IN THE BACK! IN THE COOLER! He rushed over to herd them away from the plate glass. THERE'S A TORNADO HEADING DIRECTLY FOR THIS DINER! WE NEED TO GET EVERYONE TO SAFETY IMMEDIATELY! To his credit, the manager didn't hesitate. After a brief glance at Mark and Jim soaked to the bone, he nodded and waved his arm towards the door he'd just come through. YES! EVERYONE QUICKLY! THE COOLER IS PROBABLY THE SAFEST PLACE! IT'S BIG ENOUGH TO FIT EVERYONE IF YOU SQUEEZE IN!

Do you know why they call it Slime? Because the name Smish was already taken. Lenny Smish was a lawyer, a Hollywood lawyer. Let me explain that. Hollywood is heaven for lawyers. There's always somebody with a deal, a contract, a claim, or a grudge. The movie isn't over until the last lawsuit has settled. In Hollywood, Lenny was a legend. When lawyers spoke of their idols, Lenny's name was always on the list.

The cold September wind made me pull the duster close, and I crammed my hat further down on my head in an effort to keep the rain from dripping down my neck. Overhead, police drones circled lazily, scanning the early morning crowds in the district for several threats at once. They use a facial recognition software to actively scan every individual and provide a breakdown of their records to the uniformed beat cops. In a pinch, they could also act as backup to a cop in trouble. Then you had to live with the constant ribbing from other officers that a computer nerd back at the NOPD headquarters had saved you.

Jim glanced at Mark, but spoke into the phone. I need everyone on this, a level one alert! That's right, Wrigley Field! He approached a dark blue sedan with government plates parked along the curb. Still barking orders into the phone, he leaned against the car. Mark turned to Jessie, about to ask what was next, but she held her hand up, her head bent to her phone. Sir, just giving you a heads up, the FBI is now involved and advises we get all available manpower on the Wrigley Field case.

For years I have expected to perish in some ridiculous manner. I have lived through some devastating experiences that no person should survive, so therefore the gods will probably arrange for me to choke to death on a biscuit, or slip off a privy seat and break my neck. I base this on my numerous conversations with the gods in which they made it plain how much they don't love me.

Darius had just enough time to swing his gun around in that direction when out of the fog strode Jim Brody and Fury. Brody looked confused for a moment, startled to have emerged from the fog so abruptly. Then he focused on Dark, and his eyes turned into circles of amazement. "'Darius!' he cried. "'You valiant old son of a bitch! God! After all these years!' Brody rushed over to Darius without even holstering his pistol and gave Dark a bear hug which took the wind out of his former companion. Brody finally released Darius, took a step backward, and looked his old friend over. "'Lance, I can't believe it! Whatever this is, what a goddamned comforting sight you are! Lord, I've forgotten how snazzy you looked! Why, you are as dapper as the day you died and that's more than thirty years ago!'
