Osage County, the heartland of Oklahoma's Great Plains. The only thing bigger than the Crossbell Ranch is the mystery that surrounds it. In 1970, this is the domain of 32-year-old E.C. Mullendore III. E.C.'s net worth is estimated at over $37 million, more than $230 million in today's money. From his mansion at the center of the ranch, E.C. can look out on the four points of the compass and know that the horizon belongs to him. But on September 26, 1970, E.C.'s world suddenly closes in on him. So far, everything police know is based on the statement of the only eyewitness, E.C.'s personal bodyguard, Chubb Anderson.

Only about 3,000 feet above the ground, the plane doesn't have enough altitude to make a full circle. It would hit the ground before making it back to the landing strip. Pearson decides to try a maneuver called a side-slip. Practically unheard of on commercial airliners, but sometimes used by glider pilots, Pearson plans to force the aircraft into a sideways free-fall, allowing it to drop quickly without increasing its forward airspeed. Performing a side-slip maneuver in a glider is one thing, but attempting one in a 767 is highly risky.

By the end of the 1984 operating season, the Norfolk Southern Steam Program had reached its pinnacle in popularity, totaling 97 excursions over an eight-month span. With the bulk of the work being powered by Norfolk and Western J Class No. 611, it was clear that another large locomotive was going to be needed to haul the ever-growing number of sold-out excursions. As luck would have it, displayed outdoors in Roanoke at Wasena Park was a 2664 Simple Articulated, capable of hauling 17,000 tons and competent at speeds reaching 70 miles an hour, one of Norfolk and Western's own, Class A No. 1218. On May 10th of 1985, the 1218 was towed from Roanoke and sent to the Irondale shops in Birmingham, Alabama to see if the lifeless engine could be brought back under steam once again. After 22 months and close to a million dollars, the 1218 moved under its own power for the first time in almost 30 years. While hauling a string of hoppers from Irondale to Wilton, Alabama and back, she showcased an effortless preview of the power she would soon exert on the excursions to come.
